Viktoriia Dudar: R/W Lesson 2: Identifying and Writing Arguments

LESSON: IDENTIFYING AND WRITING ARGUMENTS

Guiding Questions: Why college education is important? How to support a claim with textual evidence?

Lesson Description: Students complete reading the NYT article “Even for Cashiers, College Pays Off” by David Leonhardt. While reading, students are asked to highlight/underline arguments for and against college education in different colors. In class, student work in small groups to identify opposing arguments in the article. They fill out a table by paraphrasing and selecting quotes from the article. Then, students select a point of view and write a short argument supporting it with personal examples and textual evidence.

Learning Objectives:
·   Applying close reading strategies
·   Identifying opposing views
·   Using textual evidence and personal examples to support a claim
Materials:
·   Lesson handouts
·   Color highlighters

Lesson Steps:
1.      As homework assignment, ask students to read the article using close reading strategies and highlight/underline opposing views on college education.
2.      In class, divide students into pairs. Ask students to fill out the table using quotes and/or paraphrasing information from the article. Remind students to include page and paragraph numbers. (30 min.)
3.      As students are finishing working on the activity, ask one member from each pair to come up to the board and record an argument. Review the arguments on the board as a class: ask students to explain why quotes they selected support or oppose the idea about the importance of college education. Encourage students to add their personal examples. (30 min.)
4.      Ask students to write an opinion/argumentative paragraph about the importance of college education for homework.
5.      Next class, review students’ homework by asking them to read aloud their paragraphs. Ask the class to comment on what they liked about each other’s writing. (10 min.)
Alternative Review: If you can afford spending more time on review, ask students who have the same point of view to work in small groups of three. Ask students to compose a paragraph for or against college education (they can use the writing done for homework) and record it on big paper. Distribute post-its to the class, and ask students to post what they liked about each other’s work. Review each poster and comments it received as a class. (30 min.)

Assessment: Collect students’ homework and write comments.

For and Against College Education

For each point of view record the quotes or paraphrases of the quotes in the table below. Remember to include the page and paragraph numbers.

College education is important
For
Against

Please add any other argument based on your personal knowledge and experience.

Select a point of view about the importance of college education: Do you think college education is essential for success? Write a paragraph which explains your point of view. In your paragraph, state you point of view and support it with the quotes from the article and your personal examples.
